Watching South American pop TV and all the presenters are like the whitest people who still check off 2-3 distinct elements of distinctly Latin look (like, not even Vanessa Hudgens, more Ricky Martin), the artists are actually brown, and the imagined teen audience (as represented by fan-on-the-street/-in-the-studio bits) is straight-up white

Damn it’s almost like there are white people in South America

quick question tho, why do non-latinos get shocked when they learn there are white people in south america? most people i have met perceive south america as 100% mestizo and/or indigenous and its like damn r u forgetting history… all the european migrants in the last century…

Most are Americans or Euros with an American perception of Latin America, which is of migrants from Southern Mexico, most of which have lots of Indian blood. This is all that’s portrayed of Latin America in popular media.

yeah sorry you guys get so often overlooked in assembling the Great Family Tree of Whiteness, my point was really more that while I knew you were there, and had been told that race played part of your societies’ stratification, it was striking to see it represented so guilelessly without the “multicultural” obsfucation youd expect in America, with token diversity at every level
