My love of linguistics first emerged when I was a profoundly mentally ill and unmedicated 15-year-old and I read a biography of J.R.R. Tolkien and learned that poring over reams of minute data, finding patterns in the data, ascribing outsized importance to those patterns, and trying to convince other people to see them is a branch of science you can go to school for

One of these days I’m gonna go back and finish my degree and when I do that I’m gonna find an artist to make me a fake diploma that says “Professional Pattern Noticer”
