My closest college buddy was this Boston kid with a truck driver dad and a mom who was the office side of a construction contractor who had been tested at like 78 IQ but then they realized he had ADD and gave him Ritalin and he turned into this space genius who hung out at the Harvard library and Johnathan Culler and some other big “Theory” figures – which was a school of literary study that had been big but was now pushed back to redoubts at Cornell and UC Irvine – recruited at 16 to be the field’s salvation, he was delivering papers at conferences his first year, eventually he ended up specializing in like, how trade goods from the newfound Americas affected 16th century European prose? He went on to Medieval Studies at Columbia before he looked around like “what the hell am I doing?”, married a girl he’d known in Boston, and switched to law school
