I just realized for the first time that people who didn't grow up around Philadelphia have no idea of Mummer's Day
Okay so every New Year's Day we'd have a parade that was like 1/4 New York's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and 3/4 New Orleans Mardi Gras, with all these krewe-style groups that had been passed on for decades upon decades fielding sections with drumlines and men in the most extravagant feathered costumes
this was all downstream of a big historic Lord of Misrule costumed marching tradition that all of the 1st through 3rd Ku Klux Klans were drawing on, in different ways
