Man a lot of anime into the 2000s was not dubbed very well. Like, the theatrical release of Spirited Away was well-dubbed, but VHS releases of whatever at Suncoast would have like weekday afternoon kids’ animation levels of voice acting and directing at best, with an awkwardly translated script synced to foreign mouth timing by an iffy in-house team (which often provided the semi-pro voices), a lot of stuff that had nuance and characterization you could still pick up from the Japanese was totally washed out in English
