On r/cats like:

  • “Oh haha my cat keeps getting into fights with neighbor’s pets”
  • “he runs around the neighborhood asking strangers to feed him, what a goofball”
  • “he snuck into someone else’s house and ate their cat food and then ran up a $1000 vet bill because of it, look at my clown bastard”
  • “he caught a bird and brought it home”
  • “he attacked a porcupine 😖”

This is so jarring to me! My dog loves to run out into the middle of the road without looking, and will have a serious DEFCON-2 gastrointestinal event if she eats something outside her strict diet. She can barely defend herself. She’s got shit vision too. If I let her run around outside unsupervised and she did any of the things cat owners laugh about she would have an unacceptably low chance of survival. I know cats and elderly dogs are not the same, but a cat isn’t invincible either… Dont you think about what your cat is up to when they’re gone? Isn’t it nerve wracking when you’re at home and haven’t seen your cat for hours? Is it eating something that will harm it? Is it fighting something that can hurt it? Is it wounded and calling out for you??? Jesus. The horror… How do you people handle it?

I can barely keep her from getting run over when she’s inside.

Well part of it is that cats live communally but hunt for food solo, so their instincts are a lot better attuned to “going off and Dealing With things by yourself” than dogs
