I am so glad I waited years after moving in of clearing out the yard and getting used to how I use the space before having contractors redo it, I’ve been thinking up new, practical touches to make it better the whole time

Recently:

  • On the backyard lower level, next to the hot tub (on the upper level) and thus terminus for plumbing, have a shower head to clean a bit without going in to the bathroom
  • In fact, have a water fountain too, so I don’t have to go inside for a drink when I’m working up a sweat (esp. if I’m gonna put my weights down there) or shoot myself in the mouth with the hose
  • And have it have one of those foot pedals that fills a built-in dog bowl, for if people bring theirs over to backyard gatherings
  • Have a roll-out section in the dead space under the deck where I can toss dead logs to culture mushrooms in the dark

My philosophy is like, “remember Hearst Castle, where in every situation they took a generic idea of ‘thing that would be nice for a house to have’ and irrespective of anything else about the place built the comically maximally Rich Guy version of that? The opposite.”

Actually wait, did that home theater mean they kept a projectionist on staff? Was building it on the Central Coast in 1919 after it was no longer vital to feeding SF through coastal shipping a way to find good help?
