Looking back on “favored quarter” public school gifted education in the 1980s-90s, it was probably a legacy of the psychotherapeutic 20th century, but there was a lot of stuff understood as adjustment or socialization issues, arising from the experience of coming of age anomalously intelligent, that in retrospect was obviously autism.
