In SE Pennsylvania there’s a trend where like 2 minutes outside of any concentration of settlement is a thicket of pretty thin but 3 or 4 story tall trees and that’s cause the historic trend was for the properties just outside of town to keep woodlots that they would harvest and sell to townspeople as fuel or raw material, and they would fell maybe 1/20 of the trees each year, but since that was obsoleted they all grow to maturity unmanaged and crowd each other
