So basically anyone they’d let rent a go-kart can fly a plane, at least now in 2021 when you pick things up (the back-up/forward-down control scheme, the way pitch and speed relate, how to maneuver and that you can turn tighter by pulling up while you bank) as background knowledge from vidya
That’s the most trivial part of piloting, though. When I did it the cockpit training sequence was something like
- flying straight
- making turns
- changing altitude
- slow flight
- taking off
- landing approach (incl. radio comms)
- landing
- landing in crosswind
- stall recovery
- landing on grass
- landing on uneven surfaces
- navigation*
- IFR (“Instrument Flight Rules”), flying with no visuals in the dark
- contingency planning (there’s a lot)
*back then (the early 90s) this involved paper maps and chaining radio beacons together but GPS was just coming in, dunno what that’s like now. Sure isn’t free flight, Harrison Ford’s best efforts notwithstanding
