Ardmore etc. is called the Maine Line because it was the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. now served by SEPTA's Paoli-Thorndale Regional Rail line, but the Main Line name stuck. looking it up on Wikipedia apparently the railroad line was itself originally part of a broader Main Line of Public Works connecting Philly to Pittsburgh with rail and canals
