But uh, ever thought about how parental the relationship in Annie Hall was? Like there’s this older man – already someone in political and media life – who cultivates her life as a guide. Improves her real estate situation, gets her back to singing, into therapy. Inducts her into the right way to be – how to inhabit the city, to see The Sorrow and the Pity, what to think of Marshall McLuhan.

And in the end her leaving is kind of understood as the sorrow of a dad seeing his little girl leave the nest, leavened with the pride that it was how he raised her that enabled that independence, no?
