Twitter made the writer the brand and contributed to the masthead losing discipline, making the writer the unit of business seems like a reasonable response. It’s clear they’re actively recruiting writers, it’s not clear how this pump-priming relates to stable state.

De Boer I don’t think is such an amazing writer as some people seem to – his prose is slightly mannered in an MFA way, which is to figure, coming from a background in collegiate writing instruction. But he does seem to show up in the contexts that’ll turn out to matter, which is my thing, I remember once in must have been like 2009 seeing him somehow in a three-way issue with Sady Doyle and Rod Dreher
