I will say in favor of urban freeways, when I lived in LA and took the freeway past midnight so use was below designed capacity, the thing is it gives the huge sprawl the car-legibility of a midsized city on surface streets – 3 min downtown from reasonably central Echo Park, 6 or 7 from Hollywood, from there like 20-25 across the city to the beach
