something about queer scenes, and especially generational differences getting all weird and viperous and backbitey was in the 90s (when we all first decided it was great) it was a lot more heavily filtered, like if you were like, A Known Queer you were necessarily more open/more assertive/more charming/better tied into countercultural power centers/less dependent on normie ties, and institutions and dynamics were optimized for that
