When I was a kid a family friend who was a pilot taught us that flying a commercial plane was so safe and easy it was boring while also scaring us to death with horror stories about idiots in private planes. In hindsight I have no idea how he straddled that line but it worked, I have zero fear of flying but you couldn’t pay me to get in some rich dude’s cessna

In the same spirit as those memes where “people who watch anime” and “people who don’t watch anime” bond over making fun of people who watch anime, private pilots join with professional pilots in contempt for private pilots

I remember when Flying magazine, the private pilots’ periodical, had the Aftermath column of 3-5 summarized NTSB reports each month so you could learn not to be like those idiots

That’s where I learned the Beechcraft Bonanza was called “The Doctor Killer”
