me: haha what’s with all this nationalism

also me: ::gets drunk and spontaneously starts singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag”, which a piano-playing teacher’s aide taught us in 2nd grade, and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” which we learned for our elementary school graduation ceremony, and the Wolfe Tones’ “Come Out Ye Black and Tans” which my dad had in his car tape deck for most of the ‘90s::

  1. siliquasquama said: It really threw me for a loop when I learned that people in other countries didn’t wave their flag everywhere, didn’t have a flag pledge, didn’t have a flag day, and were frankly disturbed by American habits of showing national pride. I lost sight of the difference between patriotism and nationalism.
