Well of fucking course they did. All of the journalists gaping their jaws at this are very clearly not from Pennsylvania, they very clearly do not know what JoePa was. He was the living patron saint of all of Pennsylvania that wasn’t Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, in that space I’d say he alone was 40% of an affirmational civic narrative that was pasting together a state that was really falling apart on the fundamentals

For YEARS it was a major plotline that he was chasing Eddie Robinson’s record of 408 NCAA wins, they forced him out at 409

Of COURSE they were holding off til then, as it went down the students hung and burned the trustees in effigy, if they had denied that dying man the chance at his glory that had been the civic narrative of an increasingly horsewhipped state for years I guarantee you it would not have been just the students and it would not have been in effigy.
